Career Coaching

Do you need a Career Coach? What exactly is a Career Coach?

Part personal consultant, part sounding board, part manager. Yes, manager. Remember the person who was there to give you direction, guidance, advise, motivate and training--but who no longer has the time or inclination. For a large number of people, it is now the coach--not the boss--who pushes you to succeed, to hire, to fire, to fine-tune a sales pitch, to stretch.

Career Coaches are hired to shore up executives or, in some cases to help them to move on. Workers at all levels of the corporate ladder, disillusioned by a lack of advice from inside the company, are taking matters into their own hands and hiring coaches for guidance on how to improve their performance, boost their profits, and make better decisions about everything from personnel to strategy.

"Why would I need a coach"? You might ask. I am successful, I am happy and my performance review was good. That is precisely the reason that Tiger Woods or Pete Sampras needs a coach. Tiger Woods could say, "I know how to play golf. I won the last tournament." However, his coach is probably the most important person in his life.

How to find a good Career Coach

Finding a good career coach is a dilemma as the profession is relatively new and unlicensed. The following criteria are good guidelines.

  • Master's or Doctorate Degree
  • Proven experience as a professional in your field or like field
  • Openness and flexibility to their approach at being 'your' coach
  • Ability to be patient and push you to succeed simultaneously

Thoughts to Ponder

When you know that what you're doing is right, nothing will be able to stop you. When you are absolutely convinced of the true value of your efforts, you'll have the courage and the persistence to see them through. To believe in what you're doing is not just important. It is everything.

Anything less cannot possibly succeed. For any accomplishments you reach while living a lie will ultimately be of no value.

It is not always easy to live true to your highest values, true to your authentic self, true to what you know is right. Yet it is always your best choice.

When you deny what you know is right in order to follow the expediency of the moment, the benefits you gain are trivial and fleeting. Choose instead to live each moment true to the highest values you know.

Then, who you become will be the fulfillment of who you truly are. Why would you ever want to be anything less? —Ralph Marston
